The 2015 Freedom High School boys soccer team and the 2016 Freedom High School girls soccer team were two of 38 teams to be recognized with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award. This award recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season based on the number of cards accumulated divided by the number of games played (i.e., 5 cards divided by 20 games played is 0.25 or 25%, which qualifies for a Silver Award).
The FHS girls team, one of 32 girls teams recognized, won a SILVER certificate and the FHS boys, one of only 6 boys teams recognized, won a BRONZE certificate. Neither team had a red card ejection for their entire season. The Charlotte Latin girls (Gold) and Jacksonville High girls (Silver) were the only other North Carolina teams to receive one of these awards.
